When is autumn in Kyoto?

Usually from mid-November to early December. It shifts by a few days each year with the weather: gardens in the hills turn first and the city centre a little later.

It's the most beautiful time of year and also the busiest, so it's worth booking your date early: I take one group a day.

Where to see the maples

• 清水寺

  Kiyomizu-dera

  The wooden stage above a sea of maples. Best first thing in the morning.

• 東福寺

  Tōfuku-ji

  The Tsūten-kyō bridge spans a whole valley of maples. One of Japan's most famous views.

• 永観堂

  Eikandō

  Known as the temple of maples, with evening illuminations in season.

• 南禅寺

  Nanzen-ji

  The brick aqueduct and gardens, a short walk from the Philosopher's Path.

• 嵐山

  Arashiyama

  The hills around the Katsura river turn red and gold.

• 奈良公園

  Nara

  If you like, the deer under the park's maples, 45 minutes away.

An autumn day, for example

1. 07:30

   I meet you in your hotel lobby in Osaka or Kyoto.

2. 08:30

   First temple before the tour groups arrive.

3. 11:00

   Gardens and the stone lanes of Higashiyama.

4. 12:30

   Lunch where locals eat (halal or vegetarian if you need it).

5. 14:00

   A second maple temple, or Arashiyama if you prefer river and hills.

6. 16:30

   Late-afternoon light, the best for photos, and back to your hotel.

Autumn tips

• Book your hotel early: November is high season in Kyoto.
• Bring comfortable shoes and a layer: mornings are cool and middays mild.
• Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
